Li Keqiang and Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany Jointly Attend the Symposium of the China-Germany Economic Advisory Committee

On the morning of September 6, 2019, Premier Li Keqiang and Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany jointly attended the symposium of the China-Germany Economic Advisory Committee at the Great Hall of the People, during which they exchanged views with the representatives attending the symposium.

Principals from Chinese companies, including State Power Investment Corporation Limited, Huawei, and Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited, and German companies, including BASF, Wacker Chemie, and Volkswagen, expressed opinions and proposed suggestions on renewable energy, 5G communication technology, autonomous driving, digital economy, mutually expanding opening-up and building fair business environment. The two leaders heard discussions and gave responses.

Li Keqiang said, the number of attendees from Chinese and German companies in this year's symposium was the largest ever, which shows that the China-Germany cooperation is continuously deepening and practical outcomes are accumulating. Both Chinese and German governments are sincere in pushing forward bilateral economic and trade cooperation. They will take seriously the candid opinions and suggestions from all representatives and implement them in the spirit of mutual respect and equality.

Li Keqiang pointed out, China is expanding opening-up, with the manufacturing sector fully opened and the financial and service sectors to be further opened, and a significant number of German enterprises have been the first beneficiaries. German companies are welcome to seize opportunities, continue to increase their investment in China and promote international cooperation in technological innovation and emerging technology standards. The Chinese side will strictly protect the intellectual property rights to foster a market-oriented, law-based and international business environment for all Chinese and foreign enterprises including German ones.

Li Keqiang stressed, to safeguard peace and stability of the world and improve the well-being around the globe, efforts are needed to adhere to multilateralism, advance free trade, expand mutual opening-up and promote economic integration among countries. It is hoped that the German side will meet the Chinese side halfway, create a non-discriminatory environment in terms of market access for Chinese enterprises to invest and run business in Germany, and relax the restrictions on exporting high-tech products in order to create favorable conditions for achieving higher-level cooperation between Chinese and German enterprises and more mutual benefits and win-win results. With the expansion of bilateral cooperation, it is normal to have some misunderstandings or problems. Li Keqiang hoped that the two sides can properly handle them in line with market principles and business rules. The stronger cooperation between China and Germany serves the interests of not only the two countries, but the world at large.

Angela Merkel said, Germany-China economic and trade cooperation has been extensive. As China's reform and opening-up advances, some German companies have set good examples in China's foreign cooperation in new opening-up fields. The German side is ready to, together with the Chinese side, jointly safeguard multilateralism and the free trade system, strengthen cooperation in vocational education and other fields, and jointly discuss and formulate the international standards in emerging economy areas such as autonomous driving and artificial intelligence. The German side welcomes investment from Chinese enterprises and will step up efforts to complete EU-China Bilateral Investment Agreement negotiations during Germany's EU rotating presidency in 2020.
