On August 10, 2017, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana H.E. Mdm. Sun Baohong attended and addressed the Ceremony of Full Power Operation of Ghana’s LEU-Fueled MNSR. Dr. Kwaku Aning, Chairman of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission Board, Prof. Shiloh Osae, Deputy Director General of Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, Mr. Qian Tianlin, Director of Science and Technology Department of the China National Nuclear Corporation, and the officials and scientists from China, Ghana, Nigeria attended the ceremony.

Ambassador Sun, on behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Ghana, extended warm congratulations on the full power operation of the LEU-fueled MNSR. Ambassador Sun said that Ghana’s LEU-fueled MNSR program is a milestone step in Ghana’s nuclear development history and a new start for Ghana’s peaceful use of nuclear energy. The LEU-fueled MNSR will help improving Ghana’s nuclear technology capability.

Ambassador Sun stressed that Ghana’s LEU-fueled MNSR program has created a Ghana Model on nuclear energy cooperation between China and other developing countries. The Chinese side has fulfilled the solemn pledge the Chinese leaders made at the Nuclear Security Summit. It is of exemplary significance to LEU-fueled MNSR development and international cooperation on nuclear non-proliferation. It not only proves the feasibility and reliability of Chinese LEU technology, but also sets a good example for the MNSR modification of other countries.

Ambassador Sun pointed out that China and Ghana are traditional good friends as well as important partners for development. Under new circumstances, China is ready to make joint efforts with the Ghanaian government to promote China-Ghana friendly cooperation to a notch higher through the implementation of the outcomes of Johannesburg Summit of Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and One Belt and One Road Initiative.

On August 9, 2017, Ambassador Sun met with the delegation of China National Nuclear Corporation headed by Mr. Qian Tianlin. Both sides exchanged views on the LEU-Fueled conversion program of Ghana’s MNSR, the prospects for nuclear cooperation between China and Ghana, and the “going out” of China’s nuclear technology.

The Ghana’s MNSR is designed and constructed by the China Institute of Atomic Energy in 1995. In 2014, the China National Nuclear Corporation, under the coordination of International Atomic Energy Agency, started the LEU-Fueled conversion program of Ghana’s MNSR. On August 10, 2017, Ghana’s LEU-Fueled MNSR achieved full power operation.
