(20th May, Tang Palace)
Respected Officials from the Ministry of Education,
Respected Delegation of University of Electronic Science and Technology of China,
Respected leading members of universities, colleges and polytechnics,
Friends from media,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Good morning! I am very happy to be part of the opening ceremony of education exhibition of University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. I heard this is the first ever education exhibition of a Chinese university in Ghana. The first is not easy to achieve and it does mean a lot.
It reflects the tremendous progress of the education undertaking of China. We have more and more global-oriented institutions of higher learning and internationalization of the universities and colleges is pacing with great speed.
It reflects the ever-increasing people-to-people exchanges between two countries. More than 4,500 Ghanaian students are studying in China. The number ranks top among all the African countries. Exchanges among universities and colleges are becoming more and more active and it is difficult to collect all the information. Last year, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, visited Zhejiang University of Technology. This year, Vice-Chancellor of Winneba Education University, Professor Mawutor Avoke, visited Jiangsu University. Early next month Hunan City Unviersity of China will set up a Confucius Institute in the University of Cape Coast, which will be the second one in Ghana. China Europe International Business School has opened it only African campus in Accra. And Regional Maritime University of Ghana jointly runs some degree courses with Shangai Maritime University of China. Through all these communications and interactions, mutual learning in the field of operating school and academic research has been deepened to the benefits of peoples of our two countries.
Today, the delegation of University of Electronic Science and Technology of China flew thousands of miles to Ghana to organize this education exhibition, which is a vivid manifestation that exchanges between the two education sectors continue to heat up. University of Electronic Science and Technology is one of the key universities of "985" Project set by Chinese Ministry of Education. Since its founding in 1956, it has cultivated a large number of high-level electronics and IT talents for the state and society. In recent years, the University has established friendly relations with a number of Ghanaian universities. From 2010 to 2015, 87 Ghanaian students successfully completed their education in this university and now more than 150 Ghanaian students are learning in this university . Upon returning to Ghana, these students have dedicated themselves to government work or business or academy, contributing their professional skills and expertise learned in China to the national construction of Ghana.
I want to emphasize China also benefits greatly from education exchanges with Ghana. Last year, a Chinese citizen was seriously injured in a robbery in Kumasi. The two Ghanaian doctors from two different hospitals who saved his life from dire danger once studied medicine in China. They took good care of the injured Chinese citizen with remarkable medical skills and passion for China. Life was saved and friendship flourished. The sound relations between countries lie in the amity between their peoples. Such efforts, though can not be quantified, have a profound and imperceptible influence on the development of bilateral relations.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I cannot conclude my remarks without wishing that more and more Ghanaian students would pursue their advanced studies in the University of Electronic Science and Technology and other Chinese universities. I also want to welcome Honorable Minister of Education to take time out of her busy schedule to visit China soon. This visit will be significant as it will lead to a fresh upsurge in the exchange and cooperation in the field of education.
I wish the Education Exhibition of University of Electronic Science and Technology a complete success!
Thank you all!
